Next to “what is Reiki?” the question most people ask is "does Reiki really work?" This is a much easier question to answer.
In fact this is a question that really should be rephrased before you answer it and then it is really two questions. [And I said that the beauty of Reiki was its simplicity!]
The question should be, “does Reiki make people better?” The answer is No!
Or, to put it another way, “can you heal with Reiki?” The answer is again, No!
.
Reiki is the “life essence” that is everything. Therefore it is beyond healing because it is beyond sickness and health. And the sooner we can stop thinking about healing, the sooner we can get on with the business of... you've got it... healing.
By itself Reiki can’t fix anything because at that level there is nothing to fix. The only way a person can heal is to be unaffected by the programming that causes the disease and allow things to be as they are.
I use the word unaffected by choice. I don’t mean remove the programming or be reprogrammed… I mean unaffected.
I know I am being obtuse, but this is important. As long as you say “I am going to heal this”... as long as you say “Reiki can do this or that”... as long as you say “I am going to get better”... all you are doing is accepting that something is wrong and in so doing you are giving that wrongness energy. You are giving strength to the ailment or to the problem. You are giving it life and power; reinforcing the illusion of duality. We should not ignore the symptoms of a problem but rather than identify with it we should recognize its true nature and work with that.
This is hard to understand and I am not skilled enough to make it clear. So, sorry, this is something that you are going to have to sort out by yourself as with everything. A good cop-out, if I ever heard one, but true nevertheless.
But here is something that I can tell you and that is how I sorted out whether or not Reiki was worth doing.
When I first started with Reiki I wasn’t sure if it was working and I was worried. I wanted proof that what I was doing was working and that I was not conning people and worst of all, self-centred as I am… not conning myself.
I know I had been told to just do it, but that’s easy to say and hard to do.
So I came up with a compromise that allowed me to give treatments. I noticed that whatever else happened, when I gave a treatment, people relaxed and often went to sleep.
So I figured that if all I was doing was giving someone who was stressed out an hour off, it couldn’t be a bad thing. In fact, I found out later that there was a really good reason for having a break. Evidently on a cellular level when we are over stressed, the cells close themselves to the up-take of oxygen, getting ready for the fight or flight thing. Short term this is fine. We avoid being trampled by a mammoth and all goes back to normal. But over the long term running on depleted oxygen up-take you find that the cells have a bit of a problem doing what cells do. Bearing in mind also that a great number of degenerative ailments thrive in an anaerobic environment and you have a problem. Relax, let the stress go for a time and you open up those cells again to an oxygen feast.
I had no way of knowing if this was any more true than all I had been told about Reiki except that it was main- stream and said with authority, so it was easier to accept.
So if I gave a person one hour of rest and relaxation I was not conning them.
I continued to give treatments and people got better and I stopped worrying why and how it all worked.
Why waste energy worrying? It gets you nowhere. Find a model that works for you and be prepared to find later that it is all wrong and then let go of it. Keep on doing this as your awareness changes and enjoy the ride.
Does Reiki really work? 12 years on and many treatments behind me...well, ask me next time around and I might have the answer. In the meantime just do it and enjoy finding out for yourself.
